Why cats?

Why cats?

Cats are uniquely cats

No, I won't spend a lot of time comparing cats with dogs, but let's face it, cats are uniquely cats. (Note: of course, the following is a generalization of the divine feline, and doesn't mean any disrespect to any of that population that comes hairless or other less-known flavors.)

Size: dogs come in an extensive array of size, from five inches tall and two pounds to almost four feet tall and 300 pounds, but overall, cats come in "fit in your lap" size.

Ears: dogs have short or tall or floppy or straight ears. For the most part, cats have . . . darling cats' ears--your simple, elegant, perky triangle.

Tail: like their ears, the sizes and shapes of cats' tails have basic parameters. On the other paw, they have an especially expressive vocabulary.

Paws: tiny, delicate, flexible, deadly. Yes, the cat. What else is there to say, except "toe beans rule!"

Fur: dogs, man. Just a whole bunch of combinations. Let's face it--cats are a little shy on curly critters, but their styling is simpler and more streamlined, and they most always still look like themselves, even when clothed.

Color: for all of the greater varieties of hair, dogs come in the basic of colors, that is, black, white, brown, red, yellow, gold, cream, gray and blue (The Complete Guide to Colors of Dogs). Kitties' colors sound lovelier--white, blue, chocolate, cinnamon, lilac or lavender, red, cream, sable or brown and cream (Coats and Colors: The Cat Fanciers' Association).

Claws: speaking of "deadly". Yes, that's true: cat nails can inflict great pain in so many ways, but, you know what? The fact that our house lions are efficient and superb hunters adds a little spice to the relationship, like dating bad boys, but without all the heart-wrenching sadness those relationships can bring.

Whiskers: twitching, tickling, light-catching, and distance-measuring, they are both utilitarian and delightful.

Purr: magic. Rumbly, soothing, curative, magical music, healing to both feline and human--the gratitude that I feel when I am gifted with a concert is unmatched.

Here's the thing: we at Jerusalem Cat Syndrome believe that cats are miraculous beings that could only have been created by God. So there you have it. We adore the kitty cats.
